Potty training your puppy doesn’t have to take weeks or even months to do. Most puppies can be potty trained in less than a week if done right.
If you have never trained a puppy before, be sure and read through all of the information here. I go into depth about what you need to do to potty train your puppy and you can find more about it in my training articles.
How To Potty Train Your Puppy:
1. Generally, it is a good idea to start potty training a puppy as soon as you get it. This is sometimes easier said than done, but it is the key if you want to potty train effectively.
2. The first day you bring your puppy home you will want to show him around and let him choose a spot on your lawn that is out of the way for him to go potty. Every time you take your puppy outside to do his business, take him to the spot that he chose. This spot is only for when your puppy has to go so it is a good idea to make sure it is out of the way. When you are just starting to house train, or if you live in an apartment and have a small dog, you may want to think about paper training your puppy.
3. Get into the habit of taking your puppy outside after every meal and at least once an hour, depending on how old he is this figure should be adjusted accordingly. You want to establish a good routine for your puppy to follow.
4. Praising your puppy is one of the most effective things you can do when house training. Puppies respond very well to praise and will do anything to try and please you if you do it right. Use this to your advantage and you will have a loyal friend for life.
5. Crate training works very well when you are potty training a puppy. Not only does it train your puppy to hold it, but it also keeps your puppy from getting into any mischief when you can’t watch him.
6. If your puppy does have an accident on the floor, and this may happen a few times during the course of training, it is a good idea to clean it up with a good pet odor sanitizer so your puppy dose not smell the spot later on and decide that he should go there again. Regular household cleaners will not take away all the scent and your puppy will still be able to smell the spot.
7. Most puppies will show signs when they have to go to the bathroom. Things like turning in circles, sniffing the floor, or arching his back while walking are all signs that your puppy may have to go potty. It is very important to watch for signs like these and act right away, before disaster strikes!
