Have you ever brought your new puppy outside to go to the bathroom only to find him peeing on your rug 5 minutes after you bring him in? This is a common problem among puppy owners and one that is easily solved. One of the reasons your puppy will do this is because he or she may think going outside means playtime, not potty time. They may be so excited that they forget to go to the bathroom, or they don’t go all the way.
A good way to handle this problem is to have a spot in your yard (or the local dog park) that is the designated bathroom spot, meaning you only go there when you take your puppy to eliminate. Always remember to reward them with a treat and lots of praise. If you do this consistently, your puppy will learn to go potty in that spot, and play somewhere else.
