Housebreaking a New Puppy

Getting a new puppy is very exciting, especially if it’s your first one. They are so cute at first with their little paws and little wet noses, but just because they are small and cute doesn’t mean you can’t start housebreaking them. 1.    Use the same door every time you take your new puppy outside to go potty. This is important for your puppy to learn because when it’s time to go out he will know where to go and if you see him just standing by that door it’s a good indication that he has to go out. Taking your puppy out to the same spot to potty every time is also important.

2.    When housebreaking a new puppy it is important that you write down the times your puppy may have to go out and put the schedule somewhere you can see it. A general rule of thumb is that you want to take your puppy out to the bathroom at least once an hour, if not more for the first few weeks. New puppy’s cannot hold it for very long and often don’t know they have to go until it’s too late.

3.    Take your new puppy out to the bathroom right after they drink any water, or about 10 minutes after they finish a meal. This will help you avoid unwanted accidents on your floor, and will get the puppy in the habit of going outside after each meal.

I guess the biggest tip when you are housebreaking a new puppy is to be consistent with your training and don’t give up.
