How to House Train Your Beagle Puppy
3 Tips to Get You Started
Beagles, like any other breed of dog need to be house trained. Of course you knew that or you would not be reading this, but how you go about house training your beagle will make all the difference.
You have probably noticed that your beagle has a very unique attitude and tends to be a little stubborn when you try to teach him to go potty outside and not on your new rug.
This stubbornness is one of the things that make house training this breed a challenge, but never fear! I will try to help you out with this article.
Learning how to house train a beagle puppy is the first step you will need to take, because if you teach them the wrong way to do something, it may take a while for you to “un-train” them.
Unfortunately many people make this mistake when they go to house train their puppy and it is one that can make the difference between an “un-trainable” puppy, and a perfectly trained puppy.
Here are 3 tips to help get you started with house training your beagle puppy:
1. Watch your puppy at all times.
I know this sounds simple and you really can’t watch your puppy 24/7 but you really need to because the moment you turn your back is usually the moment they lift their leg.
Getting a crate to put your puppy in may be a good idea and crate training does work if done properly so that may be an option.
Keep your puppy in his crate while you are busy doing other thing, just make sure not to leave him in there for too long.
2. Take your beagle puppy outside to the bathroom at least every hour.
When puppies are young they cannot hold it for very long so they need to be taken outside frequently.
It is a good idea to take your puppy out after every meal and after they have a drink of water. Taking them to the same potty spot also helps to train them so they know whenever they are taken to their spot that it’s time for business.
3. Use treats to reward your beagle right after they go potty in their spot.
This is important because your beagle needs to know that he is doing what you want and what better way to get through to him then with a treat.
Praising your puppy when he does a good job is also something that is helpful when training. If your puppy does make a mistake, and they will, a simple bad dog will do.
Only punish your puppy if you catch them in the act because they have the attention span of about 5 seconds so punishing them after they make a mistake does no good.
