You may not believe this, but you can actually train a puppy to go potty on command. Puppies are very smart and if you repeat a certain word over and over while they are reliving themselves, they will soon associate that word, such as “go potty” with going potty and will do it on command.
Using word association is a great way to potty train a puppy or even an older dog. If your puppy goes to the bathroom inside you can say something like “no go outside” and bring your puppy outside. After a little while, your puppy will associate that word to something he should not do indoors.
So how do you go about training your puppy this way? First thing you will want to do is bring your puppy outside to a spot where you want him to go. It should be the same spot every time. Next tell your puppy to go potty and keep saying that until your puppy goes. When they finish, give them lots of praise and a treat. This helps your puppy understand that going outside makes you happy.
When you tell your puppy to “go potty” make sure you are very clear so that your puppy doesn’t think you said “no potty”. Of course you can use any saying you want like “do your job” or “potty”. Just remember not to confuse the pup.
Another tip is to be consistent with your word. Pick a word and stick with that for the entire training process, it will make your job a lot easier, trust me.
Puppies as well as older dogs want to please their owners and will do anything for it, so if you give your pup treats and praise when you are training them, they will be more likely to respond to you in a positive way.
