Potty Training a Puppy without Going Insane

So you have just taken your new puppy home, good for you! Many dog owners will tell you that owning a dog is one of the greatest things in the world and they are not exaggerating. Dogs are friendly, obedient, and want nothing more than to please you, their master, so it is no wonder many people acquire a dog. The only downside to all this is that you have to train your puppy to do all these things.

Potty training a puppy is hands down one of the most difficult things to teach a new dog. It’s not that it’s hard, but it takes a certain kind of mindset to be able to deal with all the little things your puppy will do when you are potty training them. Most people seem to go about this the wrong way and end up not being able to potty train a puppy the way they would like and find it still urinating in their house even after months of training.

Luckily there is an easier way to potty train a puppy that works and is easy for you to understand and do. But before we get into that, there are a few things you should know about how you should act when potty training a puppy.

1.    Think of yourself as the teacher and your puppy as the student. You need to show your puppy where to go to the bathroom and you have to reward their behavior. You also need to keep repeating the instructions daily so that your puppy gets the hang of it quickly. Remember that repetition is the mother of skill.

2.    Have patients when potty training a puppy. Having patients with your puppy is probably the most important thing you can do because your puppy will not learn the training overnight. As I said before, you will need to repeat the training every day until your puppy gets the hang of it. Patients will help keep you from raising your voice at your puppy and keep you from going insane on the days when nothing seems to be working.

3.    Have a sense of humor, you will need it. I can’t count the amount of times I was potty training a puppy and just burst out laughing at some of the crazy things they did. I remember this one time that a puppy tried peeing on me several times! Instead of getting mad that he wasn’t doing the right thing I just laughed and kept showing him the right place to pee. Not only can having a good sense of humor make training your puppy easier, but it can help create a lasting bond between man and beast because you won’t always be getting angry at your puppy.

4.    Observe what your puppy is doing at all times. Observation skills come in very handy because you need to be able to tell exactly when your puppy has to go potty. Since all puppies are different; you need to watch yours so that he doesn’t pee on your rug (or worse) and you have to clean it up again. Some things to watch for are your puppy sniffing the floor, walking in circles, or just doing something unusual. That is the power of observation.

These are just some of the basic things you need to know about potty training a puppy and if you put them to good use, you should have an easier time training your puppy.
