Potty training is one of the very first things you will want to teach your new puppy starting the very day you bring him home.
Some puppy’s respond well to potty training, while others take a little longer, so it is important to be patient with your pup until they master this skill. If your puppy is 8 to 12 weeks old when you first get him, then you should keep in mind that a puppy that young simply cannot hold his or her bladder for more than an hour at the most.
This means your new puppy will have to be taken out to the bathroom a lot during the first few weeks.
This is not forever though and if you do a good job training your puppy now, then you will have a perfectly trained dog that doesn’t pee on your rug.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when potty training a puppy.
1. Set up a schedule. If you haven’t already, write down the times you will take your puppy out to the bathroom and make sure you stick to this every day. You puppy will soon realize this action is routine, and come to expect being let out to go potty everyday at the same time.
2. Feed your puppy at the same times every day. This is one tip I wish I had known when I started house training my dog. Don’t leave his food out all day so he can eat whenever he wants, but feed him only at certain times every day, then take him out to the bathroom. Do the same with water to.
3. Don’t get upset with your puppy when he makes a mistake. Every now and then your puppy will make a mistake and end up peeing where you don’t want him to. If this happens you should be calm about it and clean the area with a good deodorizer so it doesn’t happen again.
