Potty Training Your Puppy Using the Direct Training Method
Potty training your puppy is simply the art of getting your puppy to go potty outside, or in another desirable place, and helping him learn when he has to go and more importantly where to go. There are several methods you can use to potty train your puppy, but the one I want to focus on today is the direct method of potty training. Basically the direct method is just getting your puppy to realize that going to the bathroom outside is desirable by using praise and treats.
In order for you to convince your puppy that he needs to go potty outside, you should start training him the day you bring him home for the first time. If you start potty training your puppy right when you first get him home you will have a better chance of succeeding then if you started a day or two later when your puppy has already started to pick up bad habits.
A good way to start potty training your puppy is to take him outside right after every meal. Bring your puppy to the spot you want to designate as your bathroom spot and let your puppy sniff around a little. If your puppy goes potty right away, praise him with excitement in your voice and give him a treat. It may take a little while to get your puppy use to going potty in that spot so you may need to be patient when potty training your puppy during the first few weeks.
If your puppy doesn’t relieve himself right away, take your puppy outside ever hour or so to make sure your puppy has every opportunity to relieve himself. Keep a watchful eye on your puppy in between taking him outside to make sure he doesn’t go potty in your house. When a puppy is very young, they often don’t know that they have to go potty until it is too late so watching him at all times is very important.
If you catch your puppy going potty on your floor, you can scold him and try to bring him outside as quickly as possible if you can. Try not to continue scolding him outside though, you don’t want him to think that going potty outside is bad to.
When you get back inside, soak up the mess with newspapers and bring them out to your puppy’s potty spot so that the next time he goes he will smell his sent on the papers and he will want to go there. It is always a good idea to clean where your puppy went indoors with a good pet deodorizer so that he won’t want to return to the scene and do it again.
This whole process should take a few weeks before your puppy catches on, but if you are using a crate while potty training your puppy, you could reduce the time to a few days. Just make sure to keep a close eye on your puppy and soon with enough patients and puppy treats, your puppy will be potty trained in no time.
